Does a casual dress code decrease productivity?

It was not very much long ago that organisations insisted on formal attire. However, the current stress on business casuals seems to have set off a debate on dress code and its effect on productivity.

Unfortunately, there seems no conclusive end to this debate. There are organisations that insist on a formal dress code and there are those that believe a casual dress code is the way to go. Both strongly believe that dress code does affect productivity.

A recent Web poll of 9,105 conducted by FPC, a national executive search firm, found that 60 percent of managers, directors, vice presidents — and higher — believe a casual dress code has helped to improve the workplace. The other 40 percent of supervisors thought casual dress hurt productivity.

However, entry- and mid-level employees were almost evenly split in the debate — 51 percent said they preferred to dress casually and 49 percent said they believed wearing corporate attire made them more productive.

The very fact that organisations agonise over productivity and dress code means there is a need for a dress code isn't it?
